Online access to Mills County Newspapers

The University of North Texas has completed digitizing the microfilm and various paper copies of Mills County Newspapers. These include The Mountain Eagle, The Mullin Enterprise, and The Goldthwaite Eagle. These may be browsed at The Portal to Texas History.  The earliest issue is 1896.

Mills county was formed from Brown, Comanche, Hamilton, and Lampasas Counties in 1887.The county was named in honor of John T. Mills, a early Judge, who successively held the judgeship of the Third, Seventh, and Eighth Judicial districts. Mills county Court house is located in Goldthwaite, Mills County, Texas. According to the Mills County Historical The town was named for Joe G. Goldthwaite, the railroad official who conducted the auction of town lots.

John Cormack won the bid to build the court house in 1889 for the sum of $27,000. The courthouse burned on May 5, 1912 and was rebuilt the following year. Luckily, no county records were lost in the fire.

A World War II memorial was erected on the Mills County Courthouse Lawn and dedicated on May 29, 2017. It lists by name the county residents who served during WWII and indicates those of them who gave their lives. World War II Memorial dedication

Additional stones were dedicated November 11, 2018 for county residents who served during WWI, Korea, and Vietnam.

However, our neighbor county has "The Comanche County Public Library" which is also on-line, and they have one of the best Genealogy Libraries in the area,

is a must see place to visit or write for the serious researcher and the family Historian, whether researching Texas, Tennessee or other Southern States, This is the place to go to first.

Mills County Look Up Volunteer's

The Mills County Historical Museum has a genealogy/research area that is available to anyone from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Copies of the local history books are available, death cards from the funeral home, obituaries taken from newspapers, family history books, and school annuals. An employee or docent can assist the visitor if desired. The local history books are also available for purchase from Mills County Historical Commission.

Mills County Researchers have agreed to assist with lookups. These Volunteers are willing to look up the resources listed by their names, which include the Mills County Courthouse records for Birth, Death and Marriages, Hamilton County records that pertain to Mills County (Mills County was formed from part of Hamilton County in 1887) Hamilton County Newspaper Coverage.
